This deity was hid underwater to protect it from Mughal Invaders. After sometime when the temple authorities searched for the idol they could not find it. But, they found a stone deity (Devaraja Swamy) which resembles Athi Varadar in a mountain called Padma Giri. So the temple authorities installed Devaraja Swamy as the moolamurthy inside the temple.

But in the year 1709, Athi Varadar appeared out of the water, after 40 years. So, the temple management decided that it was Swamy’s will to appear once every 40 years and give darshan for 48 days. Athi Varadar appeared on July 12 1939 and again on July 2 1979.
