He was the son of one Vidyavati, an astrologer and astronomer. He was a congenital deaf-mute. But through the grace of Goddess Kamakshi he gained the power of speech. On knowing this attainment of speech by Mooka because of the grace of Devi, the then Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Vidyaghana, sent for the boy's parents and told them of his intention of giving sanyasa to the boy and, with their consent, gave sanyasa to the boy and ordained him as his successor in the Kamakoti Math. Vikramaditya Sakari of Ujjain, Matrugupta, some time king of Kashmir, and Pravarasena, who succeeded Matrugupta on the throne, all considered it a rare privilege to serve at the feet of this great Acharya. Muka Sankara is the author of Muka Panchasati, a lyrical outburst of poetry on Kamakshi, The mellifluence of the work is said to be rivaled only by Lila Suka's Krishna Karnamrta. He attained mukti at a village near Godavari on full moon day in the month of Sravana of the cyclic year Dhatu (437 AD)

Parameswara

The region where the temple is located was called Vidarbha Desa and ruled by a king named Viroacha. Due to misdeeds in preceding birth had no heir. He prayed in Kailasanathar Temple

and Shiva, the presiding deity of the temple gave a boon that the Dvarapalas (the gatekeepers) of the Vishnu temple will be born as sons to him. The princes were devoted to Vishnu and conducted yagna for the welfare of the people of their kingdom. Vishnu was pleased with the worship and appeared as Vaikundanatha to the princes.

Three sanctuaries host the image of Vishnu in different postures -

  1. seated (ground floor),
  2. lying (first floor; accessible to devotees only on ekadashi days) and
  3. standing (second floor; inaccessible to devotees).
The logical and complex plan of the temple provided a prototype for the much larger shrines to be constructed all over Tamil Nadu.

The external cloisters, for instance, with their lion pillars, are predecessors of the grand thousand pillared halls of later temples.

Blind

A Teacher from a blind school in Poonamallee near Madras, came for Swamigal's darshan and said he will bring the children on a particular Sunday and since they cannot see, he requested that Periyava should talk to them. He brought the children on the said day but, unfortunately Periyava was on 'Mouna vratham' Vow of Silence, that day.
The Teacher cried saying, "I have disappointed these children!"
Just then Mahaperiyava came out, sat by the side of the Well and asked the teacher to bring the children near Him. He then asked them one by one, their names, the place where they came from, how they became blind, etc.
Everyone around was touched and were in tears. The Teacher cried again, but now in Joy.
The Jagathguru, who had not come out of His Mouna vratham even when the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the President V.V. Giri visited Him, did so for the blind children!
